OUTREACH

In addition to our competitions, our team also participates in a variety of community events. We hope to cultivate a passion for STEAM within our local communities, and actively seek opportunities to spread the joys of robotics to young minds. Our outreach endeavors include mentorship, volunteer work, and interactive demonstrations of our robot. We have assisted at local elementary and middle schools, as well as running events in our own high school.

EVENTS

MARCH 8, 2024 - SINK OR SWIM CHALLENGE

The Sink or Swim Challenge was a building event hosted by us with support from the Scarsdale Public Library. Using their makerspace, the MAD Lab, we hosted a design contest where participants built rafts with popsicle sticks and pool noodles and then tested to see which raft held the most weight. At the end of the event, we let the students drive our robot in a small demo using our Center Stage game elements.

Special thanks to Ms. Boyer from the Scarsdale Public Library for helping us run this event!

DECEMBER 1-15, 2023 - THE 1ST ROBOTICS GAME JAM

During the month of December, we hosted our first-ever Game Jam. The Game Jam was a school-wide competition in which student participants had a limited amount of time to design, code, and build their own video game from scratch. Through hosting this event we intended to provide an opportunity for those interested in STEM to exercise their passion, while also teaching the skills of collaboration and project management to participants.

OCTOBER 6, 2023 - GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP DAY

Our high school hosts an annual Global Citizenship Day where students and teachers discuss pressing social issues. We gave a presentation educating students on new AI models and research in topics such as chatbots, recommendation algorithms, and computer vision. We explained how these different applications of AI work, how they will impact us, and some ethical issues associated with them.

2022-2023 - FOX MEADOW ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

From spring of 2022 to the end of the 2023 school year, we have been sending some of our members weekly to the Fox Meadow Elementary School, where we assist one of their computer teachers in his after-school clubs. We helped out with their robotics club in the spring of 2022, their 3D printing club in the fall of 2022, and their coding club in the spring of 2023. On the last day of their coding club, we brought our robot and some of our game elements to the school and allowed the students to drive the robot.

MAY 26, 2023 - NON SIBI DAY

For the 2nd annual Scarsdale High School Non Sibi Day, we gave a presentation on deepfakes explaining what they are, how they are made, and how they will impact us. Our audience participated in several activities to reinforce basic understanding of autoencoders and training.

Additionally, we submitted an entry for the Non Sibi logo design contest and won. The design was printed on 1,500 stickers which were handed out throughout the day.

MAY 12, 2023 - STEM-TASTIC FAIR

We had the pleasure of doing volunteer work at the STEM-tastic Fair by the Mamaroneck STEM Alliance. We demonstrated the basics of cryptography to our visitors by using a paper wheel to represent a Caesar Cipher, and we helped young engineers build structures with KAPLA blocks.

APRIL 22, 2023 - SCARSDALE HIGH SCHOOL CARNIVAL

On April 22, we set up a booth at the Scarsdale High School carnival. Similar to our Pi Day activity, players could drive our robot and stack cones onto the junctions to win prizes. We charged $5 for the event, and offered candy, snacks, and stuffed animals as prizes.

MARCH 14, 2023 - PI DAY

Our school's math department celebrated Pi Day on March 14. We joined the festivities by hosting a small demo of our robot and our Power Play game elements for people to play. Participants could maneuver through a smaller version of the playing field and place cones onto the junctions.

DECEMBER 10, 2022 - JOHN JAY SCRIMMAGE

Prior towards the first competition of the season, we participated in a scrimmage at John Jay High School. The scrimmage gave us insights on the strategy of this year's game and what we needed to improve on our robot before the real competition.

A 113-point match from the scrimmage

OCTOBER 16, 2022 - HLS COMMUNITY DAY

We participated in the Hudson Lab School's community day, where we used our Freight Frenzy game elements to set up a station for visitors to interact with our robot. Similar to our carnival booth, participants could drive our robot and place cubes and balls into a deposit box.

MAY 27, 2022 - NON SIBI DAY

We created, rehearsed, and performed a presentation to a group of classmates about the AI Stop Button Problem/Paradox. We connected this presentation to the errors inherent to allowing AI to control important aspects of life, such as Amazon's failed hiring bot.

APRIL 23, 2022 - SCARSDALE HIGH SCHOOL CARNIVAL

This year, the Robotics team participated in our high school's Spring Carnival. We set up a booth where participants could drive our robot to gain points and win prizes in a game that involved picking up and placing blocks in specific locations. This allowed us to both raise funds for future robot improvements and to expose younger children in the community to what we do.

APRIL 1, 2022 - EDGEMONT ROBOTICS SCRIMMAGE

The Scarsdale Robotics team coordinated with the Edgemont Robotics team to meet for a post-season scrimmage in spring of 2022.

SEPTEMBER 13, 2019 - GUEST SPEAKER

The Scarsdale Robotics team welcomed Mali Marton from Spaceil to talk with the students at Scarsdale High School about the Israeli's process of sending a spacecraft to the moon and the impact that it had on Israel.

MARCH 31, 2019 - WHITE PLAINS STEAM EXPO

We were thrilled to be part of the White Plains STEAM Expo and have the ability to learn from the other FIRST Tech Challenge teams about their experiences in making their own robots. For this event, we demonstrated our 2018-2019 robot for the guests of this event.

MARCH 7, 2019 - HEATHCOTE STEAM FAIR (HEXPO)

This year is the 5th Anniversary of the HEXPO, and we were very honored to be present at the Expo during their celebration! For the Expo, we brought our robot and some elements of the 2018-2019 Rover Ruckus FIRST Tech Competition that we competed in. We were very excited that the students were able to control the robot as well as appreciate the steps we took to build it.

FEBRUARY 27, 2019 - GREENACRES STEAM EVENT

Scarsdale Robotics was invited to participate in the Greenacres Elementary School STEAM Event. We were so excited to go to an elementary school in our neighborhood and to be able to teach the students about robotics and STEAM. For our presentation, we brought our robot from the 2018-2019 Rover Ruckus FIRST Tech Competition that we competed in last year. In addition, we brought some elements of the course from last year's competition to demonstrate our goal and obstacles we faced along the way.

When we first arrived at the STEAM Event, we were welcomed by this amazing drawing created by some of the Greenacres elementary school artists in their art class!
